Edvard Grieg

Sonata for Violin and Piano in C minor, Op. 45

Andrew WanCecile Licad

The most popular of his three violin sonatas was also the last piece that he composed for the form. While he used Norwegian folk melodies, he also thought this was a work with ‘broader horizons.’

Johannes Brahms

String Quintet in F Major, Op. 88

Nick EanetArnaud SussmannYura LeeKirsten DocterSæunn Thorsteinsdóttir

Brahms argued this was the finest piece that he had composed to his friend, Clara Schumann. The finale embodies Brahms’ desire to look to styles of the past, while leaving his own imprint with lush melodies and playful exchanges between the instruments.

Franz Schubert

Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in E-flat Major, Op. 100, D. 929

James EhnesAndrés DíazAnton Nel

One of the final works that Schubert composed that he actually heard performed. The second movement is famously used in Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon, as well as in numerous other films and TV series.
